Christmas and year-end sampling: a planning checklist for FMCG brands

By the Touchvane team ·

For a Christmas sampling campaign in Kerala, lock the plan by early November: choose supermarkets, malls and markets where your buyers shop in December, agree outlet permissions, recruit and train promoters, plan stock and food-safety handling, and decide how trial and sales will be recorded. Run the strongest days in the two weeks before Christmas and on New Year weekends.

Why December sampling works in Kerala

December is one of the busiest shopping months in Kerala. Christmas and New Year bring families into supermarkets, bakeries and malls, and shoppers are open to trying something new for gatherings and gifts. Cakes, chocolates, biscuits, beverages and snacks all benefit, because trial is the fastest way to win a place in a festive basket.

As an example, Touchvane ran a Kerala-wide in-store sampling campaign for a biscuit and cake brand launching three new cake variants in the December festive season, with promoters at 10–15 major supermarkets across districts running live cake sampling and talking directly to shoppers.

When to start planning

  • Early October: agree the goal (trial, sales uplift or launch awareness), budget and the districts that matter.
  • Mid to late October: shortlist outlets and malls, and start permission conversations with store managers, retail chains and mall marketing teams.
  • Early November: confirm outlets, dates and shifts; finalise stall or counter branding; start promoter recruitment.
  • Late November: train promoters, finalise stock and sampling-material logistics, run a dry run in one outlet.
  • December: go live, with the heaviest staffing in the two weeks before Christmas and on New Year weekends.

Choosing where to sample

Sample where the buying decision happens. Supermarkets and hypermarkets put the product next to the shelf, so a shopper who likes it can pick it up immediately. Malls suit premium and gifting products and reach families in large numbers on weekends. Bakeries and local markets work for regional reach in smaller towns.

Pick outlets by who shops there and by sales potential, not only by size. For Kerala-wide campaigns, plan district by district so every region is covered with the same standard.

The checklist

  • Goal and measure: one clear goal and the number that proves it, such as samples given, conversions at shelf or sales uplift.
  • Outlets and dates: confirmed in writing with each store or mall, including set-up times and space.
  • Promoters: recruited for each outlet, trained on the product, the offer and how to talk to shoppers in Malayalam and English.
  • Stock: enough sampling stock per outlet per day, with a top-up plan and a supervisor who tracks usage.
  • Food safety: clean serving, portion cups or wrappers, gloves, and care with allergens and expiry dates.
  • Display: a branded counter or stall that is easy to see from the aisle, and price and offer information at hand.
  • Offer: a festive pack, bundle or price offer that turns a taste into a purchase.
  • Reporting: daily attendance, time-stamped field photos, samples used and any sales or feedback captured.

Getting promoters right

In sampling, the promoter is the campaign. Shoppers decide in seconds whether to stop, so promoters need to be friendly, well groomed and confident with the product story. Brief them on the variants, the offer, where the product sits on the shelf and how to handle common questions. Plan shifts so the team is strongest at evening and weekend peaks, and keep a supervisor checking outlets each day.

Measuring a sampling campaign

Measure activity and outcome separately. Activity is promoters present, hours worked and samples given. Outcome is what changed: units sold during sampling hours, stock movement compared with a similar period, or offers redeemed. Ask outlets for sales data before the campaign starts, so you have a baseline to compare against.

Touchvane runs product sampling campaigns across Kerala, from a handful of outlets to statewide festive campaigns. Send us your brief early and we will help you lock the plan before the December rush.

Supermarkets and hypermarkets work best for everyday food and FMCG products, because shoppers can buy straight after tasting. Malls suit premium and gifting products, especially on weekends.
